How is the SHA premium calculated?
Why two people with similar jobs can pay very different SHA amounts — salaried versus informal earners explained.
SHA premium too high?
Cyber Kenya appeals your SHA premium to KSh 6,000 per year.

SHA contributions are linked to household income. How SHA works out that income depends on how you earn.
If you are employed (salaried)
Your contribution is a percentage of your gross salary, deducted by your employer. The law sets the rate and a minimum amount. Check your payslip or the official SHA site for the current rate.
If you earn informally
For people without a payslip — farmers, traders, boda riders, casual workers — SHA uses a means-testing tool. It estimates income from answers about your household: who lives with you, the house, assets and similar questions.
- Number of people in the household
- Type of house and what it's built from
- Assets such as land, livestock or vehicles
- Access to things like electricity and water
Why amounts come out too high
Most high amounts come from wrong or guessed answers during registration, often when someone else registered on your behalf. A change in your situation since then is the other common reason.
Tip: Because the answers drive the amount, correcting them through SHA's review option is the right way to fix a wrong figure.
