No income to declare? You still need to file. Here's how to do it in about five minutes.

Prefer to do it yourself? Follow the guide below.

If you have a KRA PIN, you must file a return every year — even if you earned nothing. A nil return simply tells KRA you had no taxable income. Missing it can lead to a KSh 2,000 penalty.
Before you start
- Your KRA PIN
- Your iTax password
- A phone or computer with internet
Steps
- 1Go to itax.kra.go.ke and log in with your PIN and password.
- 2Click Returns, then File Nil Return.
- 3Choose the tax obligation: Income Tax – Resident Individual. Click Next.
- 4Check the return period (1 January to 31 December of last year).
- 5Click Submit. Download the acknowledgement receipt and keep it.
Tip: Forgot your password? Use 'Forgot Password' on iTax. The reset link goes to the email linked to your PIN — if you no longer use that email, you'll need to update it first.
When should you NOT file nil?
If you were employed and received a P9 form, or you had business income, you should file a normal return, not nil. Filing nil when you had income can cause problems later.
