How to check your SHA registration status in Kenya

Many people moved from NHIF to SHA without knowing if their registration went through. Before you go to hospital, it helps to know where you stand.

Two official ways to check

SHA gives you two channels. Both are free to use. Cyber Kenya is not part of SHA — we only help you use these channels.

• USSD: dial *147# on the phone number you used to register. It works on any phone, even without internet.
• Online: the official SHA portal, reached from sha.go.ke. Use the login or registration status option shown there.

Checking on *147#

1. 1Dial *147# from your registered line.
2. 2Follow the menu for registration or account details.
3. 3Enter your ID number when asked.
4. 4Read the response. It will show if you are registered, or ask you to register.

Checking on the SHA portal

1. 1Open sha.go.ke on your phone or computer.
2. 2Choose the option for members or registration.
3. 3Enter your ID number and the details asked.
4. 4Confirm with the code sent to your phone, if asked.

What the result means

• Registered: you have an SHA account. Next, confirm your contribution amount and that your family is added.
• Not registered: you need to register. See our SHA registration guide.
• Details don't match: your phone number or ID details may be wrong on SHA's side. This is common and can be fixed.

Common problems

• The code never arrives because the phone number on SHA is old.
• The ID number was captured with a mistake.
• You registered, but your spouse or children were not added.
• The menu times out before you finish. Try again in a quiet place with good network.

Tip: Registered does not always mean your cover is active. Cover also depends on your contributions. Check your contribution status too.
